The 2000 World Series, otherwise known as the “Subway Series,” was the first intra-city matchup since 1956. While the New York Yankees defeated the Mets in a brief five games, it was hard-fought all the way. Every game was decided by no more than two runs, and the first and fifth were won in the Yankees’ final at-bat. The Yankees won their third straight championship and their fourth in five years, as series MVP Derek Jeter and both teams’ pitchers turned in dazzling performances. History, though, may remember this World Series most for Game 2’s bizarre bat-throwing incident between Yankees hurler Roger Clemens and Mets superstar Mike Piazza.
